If you need to fill a career technical education (CTE) position and your candidate doesn’t hold the required certification or endorsement, you have several options.
Content specialist
Choose this option if your candidate has strong subject-matter expertise but doesn’t hold a CTE certificate.
What happens
The candidate receives a three-year, nonrenewable interim certificate and may teach while completing the requirements for a five-year renewable certificate.
What you’ll need
The candidate must demonstrate content competency by meeting one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in the endorsement area and a passing Praxis score
- At least 100 points on the Uniform Standard for Evaluating Content Competency Rubric
The candidate must also provide a plan for completing certification requirements through a university program or another approved route.
What to do
- Submit the Content Specialist Application Packet.
- Include documentation demonstrating content competency.
- Include a plan for completing certification requirements.
Teacher to new certificate
Choose this option if your candidate already holds an Idaho educator certificate but needs a new CTE certificate.
What happens
The candidate receives a three-year, nonrenewable interim certificate while completing an approved educator preparation program.
After completing the program, the candidate may apply to have their certificate revised.
What you’ll need
- A current Idaho educator certificate
- Enrollment in an approved educator preparation program
What to do
- Submit the Teacher to New Certificate application.
- Include the approved program of study.
Teacher to new endorsement
Choose this option if your CTE teacher needs an additional endorsement.
What happens
The candidate receives a one-year certificate, either renewable or nonrenewable depending on the route selected, while completing the endorsement requirements.
After completing those requirements, the candidate may apply to have their certificate revised.
What you’ll need
The candidate must complete one of the following pathways.
Option I: College or university statement of competency
- May be renewed for up to two additional years with documented progress
- Mentoring program
Option II: Master’s degree route
- Master’s degree in the endorsement area
- Mentoring program
Option III: Content competency and mentoring
- Content competency demonstrated through a Praxis score or the Uniform Standard for Evaluating Content Competency Rubric
- Mentoring program
Option IV: Coursework and internship/externship
- Principles and Foundations of Career Technical Education
- Career Technical Student Organizations
- Occupational Analysis
- Curriculum Design
- 200-hour internship or externship
What to do
- Submit the Teacher to New Endorsement application.
- Include all required documentation.
Charter school certification
Choose this option if a public charter school needs to hire a career technical education teacher under Idaho Code 33-5206(6).
What happens
The candidate receives a public charter school-specific career technical education certificate.
