You hold or previously held a secondary career technical education (CTE) certificate for grades 6-12.

Renew your certificate

Choose this option if you hold a five-year renewable secondary CTE certificate that expires Aug. 31 of the current year. Don’t apply before Jan. 1 of your expiration year. Applications submitted before that date will be returned.

What you’ll need

Complete the equivalent of six credits during your certificate’s validity period.

At least three credits must be educationally or content-focused college or university credits documented on an official transcript.

The remaining three credits may include:

  • Additional transcripted college or university credits
  • 45 hours of approved conferences, in-service training or workshops
  • 120 educationally or content-related back-to-industry hours
  • A combination of these options

One transcripted credit equals 15 hours of approved training or 40 hours of back-to-industry work.

Important

Don’t use back-to-industry hours if you also hold a Degree-Based Career Technical Certificate or Standard Instructional Certificate.

You may add endorsements or certificates during renewal at no additional cost if you provide documentation demonstrating that you meet the requirements.

What to do

Revise your certificate

Choose this option if you want to add an endorsement.

What to do

You can also add endorsements during renewal at no additional cost.

Reinstate your certificate

Choose this option if your CTE certificate has expired.

What happens

You’ll receive a three-year, nonrenewable interim certificate. During that time, you’ll complete the requirements needed to qualify for a five-year renewable certificate.

What you’ll need

To reinstate your certificate, you must:

  • Complete the equivalent of six credits.
  • Provide two years of successful teaching evaluations from a supervisor.
  • Complete a new background check, including fingerprinting.

At least three credits must be educationally or content-focused college or university credits documented on an official transcript.

The remaining three credits may include:

  • Additional transcripted college or university credits
  • 45 hours of approved conferences, in-service training or workshops
  • 120 hours of related back-to-industry work
  • A combination of these options

One transcripted credit equals 15 hours of approved training or 40 hours of back-to-industry work.

After completing these requirements, you may apply for a five-year renewable certificate.

Important

Don’t use back-to-industry hours if you also hold a Degree-Based Career Technical Certificate or Standard Instructional Certificate.

You must be working in a teaching position to complete the required evaluations.

What to do

Apply for your renewable certificate

Choose this option if you’ve completed all requirements for your Alternative Authorization Certificate and are ready to apply for a five-year renewable CTE certificate.

What happens

You’ll move from an alternative authorization to a standard five-year renewable certificate once you’ve completed all requirements.

What you’ll need

Meet all conditions listed on your Alternative Authorization Certificate and provide documentation showing you’ve completed the interim requirements.

Documentation may include:

  • Coursework
  • Industry certifications
  • Industry externship documentation
  • Institutional recommendation
  • Test scores
  • Transcripts

What to do

Important

  • Use “Alternative Authorization Certificate Completer” for degree-based applications.

Apply for a lifetime certificate

Choose this option if you have 25 or more years of certified public school experience and want a lifetime Idaho educator certificate.

What happens

  • Have 25 or more years of certified public school experience.
  • Hold or qualify for one of the following:
    • Advanced Occupational Specialist Certificate

Years of teaching experience will be verified through state records.

If your certificate has expired

You may still qualify if you’ve met the renewal credit requirements within the past five years.

If not, you’ll need to:

You may apply for the lifetime certificate after reinstatement is complete.

If your experience is from another state

You must:

Important

  • A valid out-of-state certificate by itself doesn’t qualify you for a lifetime Idaho certificate.
  • You must first obtain a three-year Idaho interim certificate and complete Idaho-specific requirements.
  • A lifetime certificate may be revised to add endorsements if you meet the requirements.
