How do I earn my GED®?
Earning your GED® starts with creating an account, preparing for the test and completing all four GED® subject tests. Adult Education programs across Idaho can help you prepare through classes, academic support and flexible learning options. Once you pass, you’ll receive a nationally recognized high school equivalency credential that can help you continue your education or advance your career.
Create a GED® account
Create an account through the official GED® website to register for testing, schedule exams and access your records.
Use your full legal name when creating your account. This information will appear on your official records.
Prepare for the GED®
Adult Education programs across Idaho offer free or low-cost services to help you prepare for the GED®.
Services may include:
- Reading, writing and math instruction
- English language acquisition
- GED® Ready practice tests
- Digital literacy and workforce preparation
- Flexible online and in-person learning options
You can prepare through Adult Education classes or self-study materials.
Schedule and take the GED®
The GED® includes four subject tests:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Science
- Social Studies
You can take the tests in any order.
Identification requirements
You must present a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport, on test day.
Receive and manage your GED® records
After you pass all four GED® subject tests, you’ll receive your GED® credential.
You’ll automatically receive:
- A free electronic transcript
- A free electronic diploma
Both will be sent to the email address associated with your GED® account.
Idaho uses Parchment, a secure online service, to manage and verify GED® records.
You can also:
- Request a free paper diploma
- Purchase additional transcripts or diplomas for $18 each
- Send records to employers or schools
GED® records earned before 2014
If you passed the GED® before 2014, you can request a High School Equivalency Certificate from our office.
For employers and organizations
We don’t provide GED® verification directly. Employers and organizations must request records through Parchment by creating a third-party account.
Frequently asked questions
Who’s eligible to take the GED® in Idaho?
To take the GED® in Idaho, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Not currently be enrolled in high school
If you’re 16 or 17, you must submit a completed GED® Youth Waiver to your selected testing center before scheduling a test. You’ll receive an email once your waiver is processed. You can still prepare for the GED® and take GED® Ready practice tests before your waiver is approved.
Can I study before submitting a Youth Waiver?
Yes. You can prepare for the GED® and take GED® Ready practice tests before your Youth Waiver is approved. However, you can’t schedule an official GED® test until the waiver has been processed.
Can I take the GED® online?
Yes. The GED® is available online and in person through authorized GED® Testing Centers. Online testing has additional technology, environment and identification requirements.
Important
The official GED® test is available only through the GED® website and authorized testing centers. Be cautious of unofficial websites claiming to offer online diplomas or GED® credentials.
Do I have to be an Idaho resident?
No. You don’t have to be an Idaho resident to take the GED® in Idaho, either online or in person.
What if I previously started testing in another state?
Can I take tests in Spanish?
Yes. The GED® is available in Spanish and English.
How much does the GED® cost?
The GED® includes four subject tests:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts: $36

- Social Studies: $36
