Tips and Tricks for MS and HS TSA Competitive Events* – October 25th at 4:30pm EST – Presented by Ray Wu-Rorrer

Description:  With a strong background in career and technical education and personal experiences within multiple career and technical student organizations (CTSOs), Dr. Wu-Rorrer’s philosophy on education is based heavily on experiential learning and the integration of new and innovative technologies that provide a higher value for learning by youth. He firmly believes that the knowledge given to a student in the classroom is only the beginning of a student’s education. It is not until a student has had the hands-on, real-world experiences provided by CTSO’s like TSA that the concepts learned in the classroom are fully understood and applied. This philosophy is prevalent throughout his work and educational experiences.

This workshop will focus on three areas related to tips and tricks for MS and HS TSA competitive events: 1) Making the connection between classroom instruction and TSA competitive events without “teaching to the event”; 2) Practical examples used in preparing students for TSA competitive events; and 3) Time-saving strategies on how advisors can maximize community resources to operate successful TSA programs. A 10-minute question and answer session will be provided at the end of the session.

Presenter: Dr. Wu-Rorrer is a Technology Education/STEM teacher at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School and serves as the Curriculum and Instruction Resource Teacher in Career and Technical Education for the Falls Church City Public School System (VA). Since 1999, he has served as a faculty member in the Sustainable Landscapes Program at The George Washington University focusing on use of plant materials and sustainable landscaping practices for the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2015, he completed his Doctoral degree in Education Leadership, with the emphasis on STEM integration in middle school career and technical education programs.

The field of education has always been an important part of Dr. Wu-Rorrer’s life. He has continually challenged himself within the many disciplines of Career and Technical Education and worked with various organizations in planning and developing programs on regional, state and national levels.  His continued relationships and involvement with hundreds of businesses and professional organizations throughout the United States over the past two decades has allowed him the unique opportunity to coordinate various educational programs, workshops, and trainings of all sizes.
